What is the difference between a belt-drive and direct-drive turntable?

There are two primary means of driving a turntable platter: belt-drive and direct-drive.

Belt-drive: A belt-drive turntable is driven by an offset motor connected to the outer edge of the platter by a thin belt, rotating it like a pulley.

Direct-drive: A direct-drive turntable is driven using a motor positioned directly below the platter.
