Does Digital Pre-amp Mode affect the digital output on the 851C?

All Cambridge Audio products that possess digital volume control have a fixed level digital output. The volume control provided with Digital Pre-Amp Mode only applies to the analogue outputs.

We use a system to alter the volume level without degrading the audio quality. This is implemented by the upsampling circuit within the units Digital-to-Analogue converter.
